Surgical Facial Rejuvenation: Eyelid Lift

One of several different techniques that enhance the appearance of the face is the eyelid lift or blepharoplasty.  This procedure produces of two main improvements, elimination of sagging skin and removal of fat pads.  It can be performed on both upper and lower lids of both men and women.

As times goes by, skin starts sagging.  Many people have an abundant amount of saggy or loose skin on the lids of their eyes.  Making an incision in the fold of the upper lid and removing the excess skin, that can sometimes be a cause of tiredness when reading or can even difficult eyesight, can minimize the situation.  The incision on the lower lids is placed just beneath the eyelashes where it will not be visible.  But, not only skin sags, so does connective tissue, muscles, etc.  So, the eye itself drops on the fat pads that protect it and keep it in place, and so makes them visible.  Removal of the fat pad through the same incision solves this problem.

An eyelid lift can be performed alone or in combination with a neck or face lift. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, under the strict vigilance of a specialist, anesthesiologist.  In some cases it can also be performed under local anesthesia in a hospital setting.

Dr. Miguel Alfaro usually performs an eyelid lift in less than an hour, as an outpatient procedure, so patients do not need to stay in the hospital overnight.  This is a common procedure for both men and women, and it can be performed at a variety of moments in life usually determined more by photo damage than age.

Prior to surgery the patient must undergo a full physical examination, blood work, and an EKG.  Their family physician must clear them for surgery, after which they have a consultation with Dr. Miguel Alfaro to talk about the details of the procedure.

After the surgery there will be some bruising and swelling, 80% of this swelling disappears during the first two weeks.  Pain involved is minimum and is controlled with painkillers.  The patient must be very careful to move gently.  Lifting heavy objects and bending over are not encouraged for some time.  Generally recovery takes about a week to 10 days.  Make up can be used after a week.  Swimming in pools, the ocean, rivers or lakes is discouraged for at least a month.

Every plastic surgical procedure can be complemented with a non-surgical procedure to enhance results, an eyelid lift is no exception.   We will gladly recommend what is indicated in your case.
