Non surgical facial rejuvenation

There are several different treatments that provide facial rejuvenation.  Non-surgical options grow in popularity every day.  Dermal fillers, botulinum toxin type A, platelet rich plasma, fat grafting, radiofrequency, light based treatments, among others.  Most of these are designed to improve the presence of wrinkles, tighten the skin and improve its quality.  This renovation of facial features restores its youthful appearance.

One of the main complaints patients have is sagging skin that distorts facial contour and makes expression lines more visible.  Loose skin can be treated with radiofrequency, which stimulates collagen production and collagen contraction, slightly lifting and firming the skin.  Fat and volumizers like dermal fillers can also be used or injected to sculpt and detail the face. These are usually performed in a set of visits to the office for more detailed results.

Botulinum toxin type A or neuromodulators minimize wrinkles by relaxing the muscles, that when moving produce lines, in specific parts of the face.  Effects are temporary 4 to 6 months.  Many facial characteristics can be modified eyebrows lifted, eyes opened wider, frown lines, smokers lips and crows feet minimized.  Jawline can also be improved by the use of this product.

Results of these procedures can last about a year, more or less.  They depend on how much patients take care of their skin with proper skin care products for home use and professional treatments as follow up.  Sun block and proper nutrition are determining factors in skin quality.

Dr. Miguel Alfaro has been performing these procedures at an office consultation, for over 30 years.

Prior to many of these procedures we recommend the patient stop taking any products that thin the blood, even naturopathic products can have these effects.  Consult your physician before doing so.  It is possible to have some bruising and swelling after the injectable procedures that can last for a couple of days.  Light based procedures like IPL for photo damage, sunspots, photo facials, rosacea and other vascular lesions can produce slight redness of the face that resolves the same day.  Spots do get darker and last a few days to disappear.

Lately, one of the most sought out treatments is the application of platelet rich plasma.  Produced from the patient’s own blood, with NO change of an allergic reaction, this concentrate is injected into the skin of the face, neck, décolleté and hands.  It enhances collagen production by stimulation of fibroblasts by growth factors.   It can even be used to strengthen hair growth by injecting the scalp.
